SHONKYMAPS SETUP by shonkylogic ================ VERSION 3.51 23/10/2007 (refer history.txt for a list of changes) This CD/setup file contains non-routable Garmin format Australian Maps converted from the 250k scale Topographic data series 2, published by Geoscience Australia. http://www.ga.gov The data and maps are Copyright (c) Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) 2006, and are only for personal or in-house use. THEY CAN NOT BE USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. The Data has been used in SHONKYMAPS with the permission of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth has not evaluated the Data as altered and incorporated within SHONKYMAPS, and therefore gives no warranty regarding its accuracy, completeness, currency or suitability for any particular purpose. THE DATA CONTAINED ON THIS CD IS PROVIDED 'AS IS' WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE RESULTS AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE DATA IS ASSUMED BY THE USER, AND IN NO EVENT WILL THE AUTHOR BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR DIRECT DAMAGES SUFFERED IN THE COURSE OF USING THE DATA. There is no support offered or implied. Refer to copyright.txt for full conditions of use. Quick Start =========== 1) Ensure you have a licenced version Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager, Mapsource or CityNavigator installed. 2) Execute setup.exe on the CD and follow the prompts. 3) Once setup is complete, start the Garmin Mapsource/City Navigator/Trip & Waypoint manager program, and using the dropdown in the top left corner, select the "shonky large scale", "Shonky full topo", "Shonky Transparent Contours" or "Shonky Topo Without Contours" maps. You can now view, zoom, select and download these maps to your Garmin GPS unit. Motivation ========== This project has been a hobby/labour-of-love for the past few years. I created these maps for my own bushwalking / geocaching use, and if you find them useful then that's a bonus. I do not expect payment as this is not a commercial undertaking, However I have spent many 1000's of hours perfecting these maps. I hope you might find these maps useful in the country and rural areas. For navigation within city and built-up areas a commercial map product such as Garmin CityNavigator may be more appropriate. Contents ======== There are FOUR map sets on the CD A) Large-scale overview maps of Australia. When downloaded to the unit, these maps have a zoom range of approx 5km - 50km. They are particuarly useful where the GPS unit does not contain an Australian Basemap. On the CD, these maps are in the shonkymaps/largescale directory, and the map images all begin with 810. B) Detailed maps of Austrlia. These are smaller in scale and contain significantly more data. These are the main maps you would use from day to day. The zoom range is approximately 200m - 5km, depending on the area and size of the map. In remote areas the zoom range is slightly higher. These maps are in the shonkymaps/detail directory and the map images all begin with 800. These maps will display as "Shonky Full Topo" in MapSource, and have topographic (contour) information at 50m intervals (100m in Tasmania). C) A transparent contour (elevation) overlay map. These maps only contain contour elevation lines, and can be used in conjunction with other commercial products such as CityNavigator. The map will appear on top of whatever is being displayed at the time, but may only appear when zoomed in to a detailed scale such as 300m or less. This is displayed as "Shonky Transparent Contours" in Mapsource. D) A detailed map MINUS the contour layer. This series contains the same as series B, but without any elevation data. These maps use less memory than series B), although you can always download the transparent contours in addition to this series if you want both. Most users without other commercial products will only need to use maps A) and/or B). If you have other products such as CityNavigator, then it would be better to maps A) and/or C) and/or D) Uninstallation ============== If you wish to uninstall the map data then follow the following steps... 1) Open the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs 2) Scroll down to Shonkymaps and select 'uninstall'. Selecting the Maps on your GPS receiver ======================================= Your GPS receiver will have a map setup page that should allow you to select either individual map squares to display, or alternatively select a whole product set. (Try pressing menu when on the map-setup page) If you have CityNavigator or other products loaded concurrently they will likely take precedence over shonkymaps, and will display unless it is hidden by the user. The suggested use is to Show or Hide either Shonkymaps or other product sets as required. You will need to use a bit of trial and error to determine what works best for you. Registry Entries ================ (ignore this if you are not technical) The following registry entries are set up by default: (change {install path} to your installation directory, usually C:\\Program Files) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\800] "Tdb"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detail\\aust800.tdb" "Bmap"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detail\\shonkysm.img" "Loc"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detail" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\801] "Tdb"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detailminuscontours\\aust801.tdb" "Bmap"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detailminuscontours\\shonkymc.img" "Loc"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\detailminuscontours" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\810] "Tdb"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\largescale\\aust810.tdb" "Bmap"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\largescale\\shonkysm.img" "Loc"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\largescale" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\900] "Tdb"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\contours\\aust900.tdb" "Bmap"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\contours\\shonkysm.img" "Loc"="{install path}\\shonkymaps\\contours" If you accidentally corrupt the map directory and/or need to delete the maps manually, there are .reg files in the c:\shonkymaps directory that will remove these. If you have issues opening your Garmin program, you should try to uninstall shonkymaps, and start again. The Map Data ============ The following Geoscience Australia Topographic Map data has been used and will appear in the maps: Full Topographic Maps ga map data Description d - linear Creeks & rivers 1 - polygons prohibited areas a - points airports 3 - points reserves (parks etc) 3 - polygons reserves (parks etc) b - polygons build up area n - points wrecks, lighthouses, rocks f - polygons framework (oceans, islands etc) g - points buildings h - lines jetties, wharfs, breakwaters l - points localities w - polygons waterbodies w - points waterbody points v - lines roads & tracks m - points morphology f - lines state borders u - points utilities u - lines utilities r - lines railway lines r - points railway points (stations) q - polygons mines, quarries k - lines powerlines p - lines pipelines c - lines contour lines (50m) r - points railway stations s - lines sand ridge lines y - points survey marks q - points mines, craters, distorted The following 250k data has been ignored, and does not appear in these Garmim-format Maps. ga map data Description 4 - lines seismic lines e - points spot heights d - points drainage points j - lines windbreaks 1 - lines prohibited area lines c - polygons contour regions c - points contour points b - points built up points o - lines offshore lines o - points offshore points o - polygons offshore b - lines built up lines f - points framework points q - lines mines, sand dunes 3 - lines park lines 1 - points prohibited area points t - lines vegetation lines t - polygons vegetation regions t - points vegetation points m - lines levees, sandbanks w - lines waterbody lines v - points road points Many of these are redundant as they are already covered by the included data but in another format. For example, a line layer is often just the outline of a corresponding region, so it is not necessary to include both. Note that there is no facility for automatic route calculation - you must purchase the Garmin City Navigator product from your friendly GPS shop to obtain this. One common question is about accuracy of the data. The alignment of roads and tracks may shifted by up to 150m when they run parallel to another object (such as a railway line). This movement is an intentional action by GA and allows their maps to be printed with the lines on the correct side of each other. Further details may be obtained on their website. Additional (non-GA) Data ======================== There is limited Additional non-GA data included in the map. Apart from framework data (oceans, tile square definitions, ferry connections etc), notable data includes: - Tasmanian Waterfalls - Registered Tall Trees in Tasmania - Public Toilets (data from www.gpsaustralia.net) - UHF CB Repeaters (data from www.gpsaustralia.net) I am not interested in including additional vehicular tracks. Besides it being a labor-intensive process I tried this years ago, but GA then released a new version of the particular map square, which included the track, and suddenly there were multiple parallel tracks close together which was confusing. The purpose of shonkymaps has always been to aid in the persuit of outdoor activities (such as Geocaching) rather than vehicular navigation.
